How to Practice Gratitude Journaling: Cultivating a Positive Mindset

Introduction

Gratitude journaling is a simple but powerful practice that can have a profound impact on your mental and emotional health. When you take the time to write down the things you are grateful for, you are actively training your brain to focus on the positive aspects of your life. This can help to reduce stress, improve your mood, and boost your overall well-being.

Gratitude journaling is a practice of writing down the things you are grateful for on a regular basis. It can be as simple as writing down three things you are grateful for each day, or you can choose to write more elaborate entries. There is no right or wrong way to do it, as long as you are being honest and sincere. I’ve included a free template below to help you get started- no information required from you, and no tricks. Just a template!

There are many benefits to gratitude journaling. Studies have shown that it can:

How to Start a Gratitude Journaling

Step 1: Choose a Gratitude Journal.

Your journal should be one that you will enjoy writing in. Explore journals at different stores and find one that you connect to the most to get the most benefit from it. I have a few that I created on my Etsy shop that you can check out!

Find a quiet place for gratitude journaling

Step 2: Find a Quiet Place.

This should be a place where you won’t be interrupted while you write. It should be a place where you can focus on your writing. I like to write in my gratitude journal in my office in the mornings while everyone is still sleeping!

Step 3: Set Aside Time.

If you are like me and struggle to stick to new routines or habits, pick a specific time you will write in your journal. When I started, I told myself “I will write in my journal every morning after I grab my coffee”, because I make myself a cup of coffee each morning and it’s easy to link the two habits together.

Step 4: Start With a List.

I recommend just starting with writing 3 things you are grateful for. This can be as simple as having a bed to sleep in, to as complex as having a good relationship with someone in your life. Even the simplest of things matter.

Step 5: Write From the Heart- And be Honest!

It’s important to write things that you actually mean. Think hard about what you are truly grateful for- maybe it’s your living situation, maybe its a parent or guardian in your life, or maybe it’s that you get to have coffee every morning (that’s on my list almost every morning). As long as you are truthful with yourself, you will benefit from writing it in your gratitude journal.

make gratitude journaling a habit

Step 6: Make It a Habit.

Habits, or new routines, can be difficult to stick with. As someone with ADHD, I know this all too well. I recommend pairing this habit with something you already have ingrained into your daily schedule. For me, I write in my gratitude journal as soon as I get my cup of coffee in the morning. It was easy to pair the two tasks together and I can stick with it. Making writing in your gratitude journal a habit will help you in the long term.

What Do I Write in a Gratitude Journal?

There is no right or wrong answer to this question. You can write about anything you are grateful for, big or small. Some ideas include:

  • People in your life
  • Things you have
  • Experiences you have had
  • Positive qualities about yourself
  • Things you are looking forward to
  • Natural Beauty
  • Acts of kindness
  • Anything else that brings you joy!

How do I Make Gratitude Journaling a Habit?

The key to making gratitude journaling a habit is to be consistent. Start by setting aside a small amount of time each day to journal. Even if it is just five minutes, it will make a difference.

You can also try setting a reminder on your phone or computer to help you remember to journal. Another helpful tip is to find a journaling buddy who can encourage you and keep you accountable.

What are the Benefits of Gratitude Journaling?

The benefits of gratitude journaling are numerous. As mentioned earlier, studies have shown that it can reduce stress, improve mood, boost self-esteem, increase happiness, improve sleep, strengthen relationships, and promote physical health.

In addition to these benefits, gratitude journaling can also help you to:
